A Loudoun Amateur Radio Group 2013
Technician Class Amateur Radio Training Event

Friday, Saturday & Sunday - January 11, 12, and 13, 2013
                                    Rported by Bob Rodriguez, KJ4NXG

(February 12, 2013, Purcellville, Virginia) On January 11 through 13, 2013, the Loudoun Amateur Radio Group of Northern Virginia sponsored another of its popular amateur radio licensing preparation classes for Technician Class operators. The class was held at the VFW Post 1177 Hall in Leesburg, VA.

Class attendees numbered 33. These included members of the Civil Air Patrol, the Virginian Defense Force, Boy Scouts, and no-affiliated persons. Four members of LARG, Jay Greeley, KI4UTB, Henry Weidman, K2BFY, and Bob Rodriguez, KJ4NXG, and Sean Sheedy, AI4ID, served as instructors; other LARG members assisted with photography by Norm Styer, AI2C, public address system by Paul Dluehosh, N4PD, and other essentials. A guest Instructor, Mark Braunstein, WA4KFZ, from the Old Virginia Hams Radio Club, W4OVH, in Manassas, VA., helped teach the course and answer the more technical questions.

Gentlemen:

Kindly accept my heartfelt thanks for the brilliant, erudite lectures you provided to Civil Air Patrol over the last three days. While your objective was to introduce the audience to your amateur radio hobby, my own goals were somewhat higher.

I hoped to deepen the knowledge of the Senior members in radio communication which is so essential for conducting search & rescue operations. This is too often taken for granted in conducting searches up and down Virginia's valleys - the adverse effects of weather or the time of day on radio reception, the importance of the type of antenna and location, and the like.

For the younger members, it was more Machiavellian. I hoped to provide good role models and encouragement for them to pursue the hard subjects of engineering and science; and to demonstrate the benefits of electricity and some of the fundamentals of why communications actually work. You all filled this role - professional, knowledgeable about your area, making the subjects exciting but comprehensible. If some of these cadets go on to pursue careers in engineering or physics, and continue to be our next generation of astronauts, it will be in part due to your good example.

Thank you for your time and effort.
Best regards, Robert Maguire

Four meals, breakfasts and lunches, were provided partly as a courtesy by Bob Evans in Leesburg. Over 40 people at each meal were served for less than 400 dollars, offset in part by checks and cash from the Civil Air Patrol, the Boy Scouts and Virginia Defense Force enlisted personnel.

An FCC VE exam was administered by Jorge Thevenet, KD4DGQ, on Sunday Jan 13. Of 31 individuals who took the exam, 30 passed the exam to become licensed as Technician Class amateur radio operators. On January 19th another VE session was held for attendees where three who had earned their licenses at the January 13th session passed their General class exam. In all, 33 attendees participated with 31 passing their Technician and General Class exams; some took both.

By all accounts, this was a very successful training session. LARG will follow up with attendees and invite them to participate with future LARG meetings, field events and activities. LARG members are encouraged to Elmer the newly licensed operators.

2012 Technician License Training Class Report

By Bob Rodriguez, KJ4NXG

On Friday evening January 13 and Saturday January 14, 2012, a Technician Class amateur radio operator class sponsored by the Loudoun Amateur Radio Group (LARG) was held at the Winmill Carriage Museum on the historic grounds of Morven Park in Leesburg VA. The purpose of the class was to:

1) Assist local Boy Scouts in earning the Radio Merit Badge, and

2) Familiarize all attendees with the material which could be covered in the Technician Class amateur radio license exam.

The VEC exam session will be held on Saturday January 21, 2012 in Morven Park's Hofmann Building at the Equestrian Center.

Five Boy Scouts and 10 adult trainees participated. The class was taught by instructors Henry Weidman (K2BFY), Jay Greeley (KI4UTB) and Bob Rodriguez (KJ4NXG).

ARRL produced PowerPoint and film clip presentations were used as the backbone training materials for the class. The PowerPoint material "teaches to the test" by familiarizing class attendees with the ~400 questions in the item (test question) pool, from which 35 are used in various versions of the Technician Class License exams.

LARG member (and trainee) Judy Wodynski provided the Morven Park training site and served as the training class hostess. Additional LARG members Norm Styer, Paul Dluehosh, Jay Ives, Sean Sheedy and others supported class logistics.

Serving as the BSA Radio Merit Badge Counselor, trainer and LARG member Bob Rodriguez will continue to assist those scouts who desire to complete their merit badge requirements, which include a mock QSO and a visit to a (ham) radio station.

Respectfully submitted, Bob Rodriguez - KJ4NXG

Meeting People with Ham Radios
Nice Work By Abby

April 13, 2011

Hello,

Happy Wednesday (We're half-way there haha!)

I just wanted to say that I found your page (http://k4lrg.org/Projects/Where_To_Get_Stuff/index.htm) when looking for resources on amateur radio - As a tutor who's working with science students, the page has been helpful. Thanks for making it!

Right now, the kids are learning all about Ham radios and how they work. They really seem to be interested in them...I think it's because they've never really seen them before haha! One of my students found a really good page that's not listed on your site:

"Meeting People with Ham Radios" - http://www.datehookup.com/content-meeting-people-with-ham-radios.htm

I was wondering if you could include it for her? I'd like to show her that her extra work is paying off. Her name is Abby and she's in 7th grade, if you would like to add that. It might give her some extra confidence for her upcoming test ;)

Thanks again and have a great week!

Sincerely, Sarah Cogan

(Purcellville, VA., April 3, 2009 News Release Published by Jeff Slusher - KE5APC.)The Loudoun Amateur Radio Group (LARG), K4LRG, a leading Northern Virginia ARRL-affiliated club successfully conducted a General Class Training "Boot Camp" in late March. Eighteen students participated with ten earning their General Class licenses the following week, with others scheduling testing sessions at later dates. This was the first "boot camp" session for General Class, although the club operated two Technician classes for eighty-four (84) students in 2008 of which at least sixty (60) have earned their licenses - with several of those students working their way up to General during the March training session. At left, group photograph of students and instructors during Loudoun Amateur Radio Group's 28-29 March 2009 General Class Boot Camp, held at the Leesburg, VA. VFW Post. Club Training Officer Steven Reed, KW4H instituted a "game show" format for the two-day weekend sessions in which other club members served as the "game show hosts" for a particular block of questions. Following the training, students were encouraged to take on-line practice exams during the week and return to Leesburg, Virginia on April 4th to take their Element 3 Exam.

In addition to the LARG students trained the preceding week, sixteen (16) additional candidates took exams during the VEC session. Twenty-eight tests were conducted resulting in six (6) new Technicians, seventeen (17) new Generals and one Extra. The training and the exams were held at the historic Leesburg VFW Post in which General George C. Marshall was once a member and Arthur Godfrey (sk), K4LIB was a frequent guest.

LARG is planning additional boot camp sessions for 2009.

The 100+ member Loudoun Amateur Radio Group is a diverse, family oriented club with a wide variety of activities and interests including public service, emergency communications support, high altitude balloon radio, camera and video flights, fox hunts, contesting and DX-ing. Their premier events are the annual K4LRG operation in the June ARRL Field Day where they were a nationally ranked "5A station" in 2008, the Reston Bicycle Club Ride Communications Operation in August and First Night Leesburg in December. LARG launched and recovered a balloon in July 2008. A full report with audio from the event is available on the web. More about the club at http://k4lrg.org.

The Loudoun Amateur Radio Group (LARG), K4LRG, a leading Northern Virginia ARRL-affiliated club has set the bar exceptionally high for their 2009 training objectives given the high degree of success of their two "Ham Radio Boot Camp" programs held in Leesburg, Virginia during 2008. The club trained 84 prospective hams in 2008 - the vast majority of whom are now licensed. Of those newly licensed hams, 6 went to General Class and four went to Extra Class following the LARG training.

Club Training Officer Steven Reed, KW4H instituted a "game show" format for the two-day weekend training in which other club members served as the "game show hosts" for a particular block of questions. Trainees took frequent breaks at which time they could participate in a variety of amateur radio-related on-going demonstrations including HF, EchoLink, APRS, and local VHF repeater operation.

Interesting guest speakers also spoke of their amateur radio experiences including Mona Singleton, NY7P, who gave an engaging presentation on her life and times in the Coast Guard radio service, and Brennen Ernst, KI4PRK, a teenage Extra-class licensee, who gave an informative presentation on propagation.

The LARG training scenario includes a two-day seminar followed by a week of home study using the various on-line sample tests.

LARG coordinated with area ARRL-affiliated VEC's who set up two testing dates - one week following the Boot Camp, and one a week later for those with schedule conflicts. Jorge A Thevenet, KD4DGQ assembled his team of VEC's from throughout the Northern Virginia area.

Members of other clubs also attended as observers, one of which has resulted in discussions focused on cross-state collaboration to expand the student pool in addition to spreading the workload with other clubs. Discussions between the Frederick (Maryland) Amateur Radio Club and LARG are underway.

Students came from a broad spectrum of interests including local Government first-responder volunteers, the Red Cross, Civil Air Patrol, Boy Scouts, and others. Some students traveled further than others to attend the Boot Camp. Jay Slusher, KD8JJW came the furthest, traveling 175 miles from Bruceton Mills, WV. When time came for testing, he found a VEC exam closer to home sponsored by the Uniontown ARC in Pennsylvania.

The 120 member Loudoun Amateur Radio Group is a diverse, family oriented club with a wide variety of activities and interests including public service, emergency communications support, high altitude balloon radio, camera and video flights, fox hunts, contesting and DX-ing. Their premier events are the annual K4LRG operation in the June ARRL Field Day, the Reston Bicycle Club Ride Communications Operation in August and First Night Leesburg in December.
